WHSmith buys Dixons Travel store at UK airport
WHSmith has acquired 18 UK airport retail stores for its ‘InMotion’ technology and accessories business.
Travel agencies at airports and train stations have long been a source of growth for the business, starting as a newspaper retailer in the 1700s and then expanding into other areas of retail.
The acquisition of the American company InMotion in 2018 aimed to strengthen its activities in this area and expand into markets outside of North America, including the United Kingdom.
Dixons Carphone, which closed 25 Dixons Travel Outlets during the pandemic, has opened 17 locations and is located in major hubs such as Heathrow, Stansted, Manchester, Luton, Birmingham and East Midlands.
Dixons Carfon was clearly not convinced the passenger level would return to a level sufficient to support the store, but WHSmith clearly did not.
The store will build on InMotion’s experience in the US market and offer a combination of excellent customer service and premium products such as Apple and Samsung. In a ‘fully restored travel environment’ these stores are expected to generate annual sales of £ 60million.
In addition to the InMotion store, WHSmith aims to open additional outlets in all markets in the near future.
“We expect more opportunities to acquire more WHSmith stores in airports and hospitals in the future. We are well positioned as the travel market recovers and passenger numbers increase. “
