Southeastern Board of Governors extends President Vargas’ contract
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – The Southeastern Missouri State University Board of Governors announced Tuesday, June 28 that it has extended the contract of Dr. Carlos Vargas as president of the university. .
According to the Council, the new three-year contract comes into effect on July 1, 2022 and runs until June 30, 2025.
The contract includes a pay raise for Dr. Vargas. The Board said the increase is equivalent to what it approved for all University employees at its June 24 meeting.
In a released statement, Chairman of the Board of Governors Ed Gargas said, “Dr. Vargas has demonstrated a strong commitment to the University and has helped lead the University through many difficult situations over the past few years. The president of the university, Vargas, has the support of the board of trustees and we are grateful to him for all that he has done and will continue to do.
Gargas cited several accomplishments, reflected in the leadership of the board and Vargas, considered in the new contract offer.
Here are some of the accomplishments Gargas referred to:
- Establish a new Office of Economic Development and Workforce to strengthen partnerships, increase community engagement, and expand education and workforce training opportunities.
- Launched new academic programs such as the Bachelor of Science in Commercial Pilot which exceeded first-year enrollment projections.
- Create a new, focused, deliberate, and concise strategic action plan that aims to educate students to succeed and make positive impacts in their communities; stabilize enrollments in the Southeast and graduate a diverse community or learners; and improving the stewardship of Southeast resources.
- Foster an environment of success within Redhawks Athletics with women’s volleyball competing in the 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship, with women’s tennis competing in its first-ever NCAA Tournament; men’s baseball makes NCAA Tournament for second straight year; Mr. Logan Blomquist winning the 2022 NCAA Hammer Throw National Championship and becoming the University’s first-ever NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships title; and Mr. Brady Barke, Athletic Director, was named the recipient of the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors AD of the Year Award.
Vargas joined the southeast state of Missouri as its 18th president on July 1, 2015.
