Scottish islanders save couple’s wedding across ocean after Nightmare Airport saga loses luggage
A wedding nightmare turned into a Celtic dream when, after a plane laden with trouble, the local community on the majestic Isle of Skye decided to lend a helping hand to the visiting bride.
Planning to leave a solid four-day cushion between their flight and their big day in Skye, in the Scottish Hebrides, Florida’s Amanda and Paul Riesel suffered all the problems in the airline’s playbook, including multiple delays, a cancellation or two, and lost luggage.
Their journey which was supposed to be from Orlando in the UK ended up being re-routed to Philadelphia, then out of Heathrow, to Inverness and onto Skye; they finally arrived at 11:00 p.m. on the island the day before their wedding, after spending 72 hours on planes or stuck in airports.
Enter Rosie Woodhouse, the wedding photographer. Upon hearing of their difficulties, and that without everything but their rings, they were about to abandon their long-planned marriage to Skye, she felt she had to do something.
“I told them I was sure I could make it work, and Skye is an amazing place,” Woodhouse told the BBC. Rosie posted a call to a social media community and even before breakfast local islanders had responded with flying colors. “We had a full kilt set for Paul and a beautiful wedding dress for Amanda,” she said.
The wedding dress was worn by a lady from a local school cafeteria, a profession that Amanda, by some crazy coincidence, is also employed in. She felt that there was no better solution than to wear the special attire of a special woman who cared for children like Amanda does.

“The people of Skye will be famous in Orlando because we will tell everyone who listens that they are the reason our love was cemented on a perfectly imperfect wedding day,” Amanda added.
With its emerald green grass, dark moody skies, rugged landscape and rugged coastlines, one place doesn’t come much better after three days in airports than the Isle of Skye, and even if marriage has lost much of the veneer they had planned, the pictures at least show that it all worked out in the end.
