Plans for another huge warehouse park near East Midlands Airport have been revealed
Plans have been revealed to build another huge warehouse park near East Midlands Airport.
The area, which is close to the M1 at the Leicestershire / Derbyshire border, has seen a number of major sites rise in recent years, including the Segro East Midlands Footbridge and the East Midlands Distribution Center.
Now a 127-acre site next to the motorway and the A50 in northwest Leicestershire has been set aside for seven other large industrial buildings.
Newlands Developments says the £ 230million warehouse complex could create more than 1,100 jobs.
The land off Netherfields Lane in Sawley near Castle Donington is currently used by the East Midlands Shooting Club.
Members of the North West Leicestershire District Council planning committee will discuss a Newlands Developments app next week, explaining why it wants to build the industrial park.
Planning officers recommended that permission be granted for the project, although the site is outside the development area in local planning strategies.
Documents submitted to the council by Newlands do not indicate whether companies are lined up for the complex, which is said to be next to a new Aldi distribution center.
However, they say they expect 1,109 full-time equivalent jobs to be created – in addition to nearly 2,000 construction jobs over the two years the units are scheduled to be built.
The company said: “This would provide a significant number of new employment opportunities for residents of North West Leicestershire.”
The company says when the site is up and running it will be worth £ 66million per year to the local economy while generating £ 3million per year in business rates – half of which will go into the coffers of the council of district.
There has been only one objection to the project filed with planners, which is largely based on fears that the development will cause flooding.
However, Lockington Cum Hemington Parish Council raised concerns that the business park would be outside the area the district has designated for development.
The parish council said, “We have continued to oppose the construction of any additional warehouse around this area and do not believe in the real world, there is an urgent need.”
But he says the site has been targeted by dumpsters, arsonists burning trailers and bike jammers and over the years that would only continue if nothing happened there.
