From responding to emergencies to maintaining equipment and assessing risk – do you have what it takes to become an airport firefighter?

Teesside International Airport has launched a new recruitment drive to secure 10 new departures as more flights return.

With salaries of up to £ 29,500, those who succeed will be responsible for emergency response, medical intervention and first aid.

Previous experience or qualification is an advantage but not essential as there will be the possibility to undertake training.

They will also be responsible for maintaining equipment readiness, fire risk assessments and audits, and vehicle and equipment testing.

It comes as the airport prepares for its 2022 summer season, which sees the return of Ryanair vacation destinations, TUI landing again after nine years, as well as scheduled flights from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Loganair.

The increase in the number of firefighters is needed to ensure the airport is ready for the larger types of planes expected later this year.

Once filled, the new hires will bring the number of firefighters at the airport to 27 out of three quarters, overseen by Dave Rowland, the director of fire departments who has worked at the airport for 29 years.

Amy Caldwell, 29, joined the team during the previous recruitment drive.

Speaking at the time, she said: “I am really delighted to join the airport crew and the team have been incredibly welcoming.

“Working on a single site, while important, is a bit of a change from working in the community, but it’s a new challenge that I can’t wait to take on.

“There are so many great things going on at Teesside International now, and he has a bright future ahead of him, so I can’t think of a better time to be a part of the action. “
