Foreign currency worth Rs 6.05 cr seized at Amritsar airport
Amritsar, Sep 19 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Customs Department arrested two people and claimed to have seized foreign currency worth Rs 6.05 crore at Sri Guru Ram Dass Ji International Airport in Amritsar. Eighty packets of foreign currencies, which were found concealed in specially arranged cavities, were recovered by customs officers.
Late Sunday evening, during baggage security screening of outbound international passengers by airline staff on an x-ray machine on international departure at SGRDJI airport in Amritsar, suspicious images in a bag were observed. Airline staff alerted customs officers.
According to reports, customs officers proceeded to profile the passenger and he was deemed suspicious after keeping the suspicious bag at the airline counter as checked baggage and proceeding to immigration control. Subsequently, the passenger was intercepted and asked if he was carrying excessive Indian or foreign currency with him, either in his checked baggage or in his handbag, to which he replied in the negative.
However, his checked baggage, which was being held by customs, was called by the airline and his examination resulted in the recovery of 80 packets of foreign currency which were found concealed in specially designed cavities. Customs officials claimed that passengers could not produce any proof of its lawful acquisition, possession and export.
