Cork Airport to open new bi-weekly service to Paris this winter
Spanish low-cost airline Vueling will operate a new bi-weekly air service from Cork to Paris Orly this winter.
Vueling, part of the parent group of Aer Lingus IAG, will operate the route on Mondays and Fridays from November 22.
Niall MacCarthy, managing director of Cork Airport, said it would make an ideal route for a city break in either direction.
He said Cork Airport was delighted to welcome a brand new airline.
“This is exciting news for business and tourism at both ends of the route and will further increase inbound tourism from this key continental market to the counties of southern Ireland,” said Mr MacCarthy.
Cork Airport is currently closed as it is in the process of rebuilding its main runway over a 10-week period and is expected to reopen on the morning of November 22.
The main runway, which has been in service since 1961, was built 1,883m long and was extended by 300m in 1989. A surfacing project in 1999 was carried out on the original runway only, which means that the pavement in this area is 21 years old. , while the extension is 31 years old.
The development includes an upgrade of the approach to the airport, aerodrome marking and ground marking, marking of the runway edges and the central axis as well as all its drainage and duct systems.
Earlier this week, Ryanair announced the reopening of its two-plane base at Cork Airport and the restoration of 20 routes across the UK and Europe.
The € 200 million investment will restore full passenger transport capacity before the Ryanair pandemic in Cork from December and will include the introduction of new services to Birmingham and Edinburgh which are no longer served after the collapse of Stobart Air.
The airline, which closed its base in Cork last October, said the reopening would secure 60 jobs at Ryanair and create thousands of tourism jobs in the region.
